What is Young Arts?

One of the NADFAS objectives is to inspire young people with an enthusiasm for the arts and increase awareness of our arts heritage and its conservation.

NADFAS actively encourages individual Societies to promote high quality arts activities for young people. Societies work in two ways, Young Arts Groups and Young Arts Projects. Some Societies offer one or the other, some offer both.

Young Arts Groups
Groups are affiliated to member societies, are open to ages 8 – 18 and run a programme of arts events throughout the year. These events include hands-on workshops, visits to artists’ studios, galleries, museums and theatres. We organise National events in addition to an annual competition encouraging the acquisition of particular skills. Expert tuition is key to developing and enthusing the young.

Young Arts Projects
These vary according to local circumstances and follow no set format. A Society may sponsor a particular project, or organise the complete event.  Many projects involve partnerships with local or national bodies. The projects include:-

Artists in residence in schools, funding for visits to galleries and museums, art exhibitions for young artists, special equipment purchase.

We also provide grants and scholarships for study courses.

In 2007 16 Societies supported Young Arts, to the tune of a staggering £9,619.

 Examples of Young Arts Activities

A few examples of Young Arts activities include;

– Papier Mache furniture making in a primary school
– Two bursaries to study the works of Canaletto in Venice
– Pigment making at the Coutauld Institute
– Art event at a National Trust property
– Sculpture Park activity day
– Rennie Mackintosh Extravaganza in Glasgow
– Stained Glass making workshop
